The courtyard of Oriel College, with its stone walls and carefully ordered windows, is the subject here, shown as a working college quad rather than a grand monument. Oriel was founded in 1326, and by the 1830s its buildings had been altered over the centuries, which gives the scene its mix of older and newer work. The view was drawn by J.S. Prout and engraved by G. Hollis, then published in Oxford by J. Ryman in 1836. Because the coloring was added by hand, the tints can differ from one impression to another.
