Measuring a sixth plate, the smallest common daguerreotype size, this head-and-shoulders portrait shows an unidentified man facing the camera squarely, with color hand-applied to the cheeks and lips. The record names him only as a friend of Clara Barton, and the picture survives among her papers at the Library of Congress, transferred there in 1959. Dating from between 1840 and 1860, when daguerreotypes were the dominant photographic process, it reflects the period's taste for small, intimate likenesses kept in hinged cases.
