Robert Todd Lincoln, the only one of Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln's four sons to reach adulthood, appears in this portrait taken in Washington, D.C., on May 30, 1922, when he was 79. By then he had served as Secretary of War under Presidents Garfield and Arthur, had been United States minister to Britain, and had headed the Pullman Company. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio working in the capital in the 1920s, made the picture, and its large body of Washington portraits and street views is a useful record of the city and the people prominent in it. Four years later Lincoln died at his home in Vermont.
