This Toronto poster is built around a single date, Thursday, October 19, 1916, when readers were asked to give to the British Red Cross for its "stricken defenders on all the battle fronts." The phrase points to the wounded and sick soldiers the appeal had in mind, at a time when the heavy fighting on the Somme that summer had filled hospitals with casualties. Printed in color lithography by the W.S. Johnston Company of Toronto, it shows how Canadian relief drives became part of everyday home-front life during the war.
