Louis Dalrymple's cover for *Puck*'s January 13, 1897 issue makes apples its central image, with Canada and Cuba listed as the subjects. The title, "Patient waiters are no losers," draws on the old idea that fruit left on the branch will eventually drop into the hands of whoever can wait. In 1897 Americans were following two foreign questions closely. Cuba was in the middle of its war for independence from Spain, and relations with Canada were strained by trade disputes and the unsettled Alaska boundary. The cartoon turns that diplomacy into a simple orchard scene, a common approach in *Puck* during the 1890s.
