Unlike the monuments and street views that dominate the board, this map sets out the city's underground water system: the lines of its water mains, drawn across the street grid so that residents and engineers could see where service reached and where it did not. Washington's piped water depended on the Washington Aqueduct, completed in 1864, which carried water from the Potomac River above Great Falls into the city. Maps like this one tracked how the distribution network grew from that supply, and they remain useful to historians who want to see how the capital's streets were served, block by block.
