Amalie Materna was a celebrated Austrian dramatic soprano, and this portrait shows her in the years when she was among the best-known opera singers in the English-speaking world. The photoprint was made by Napoleon Sarony, the New York studio photographer whose theatrical and society portraits were sold widely in the 1880s, and the copyright notice on the mount places it within his commercial output. Materna was especially associated with Wagner, having sung in the first Bayreuth Festival in 1876, and her fame in America grew during her concert tours there. The record's date of about 1882 comes from an old caption card and has not been independently verified, so it is best read as an approximate date.
