A large crowd gathered in New York in late October 1908 to hear William Jennings Bryan, the Democratic nominee for president that year. It was his third run for the White House after losses in 1896 and 1900, and he lost again to William Howard Taft in November. The picture comes from the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency whose glass negatives record the city's streets, crowds and public life in the early twentieth century. The title was supplied by the agency and has not been independently verified, so the exact location and event are best treated as provisional.
