Few wartime posters name a venue as specifically as this one: the Palais du Trocadéro, the Paris building on Chaillot hill erected for the 1878 world's fair. The poster announces a charity matinée held there in 1917 to honor the *poilus*, the French infantrymen, from regions that German forces had occupied since 1914. Events like this were a common way for Paris audiences to show support for soldiers and for families living under occupation. At roughly 63 by 47 inches in colored lithograph, the poster was large enough to be pasted on city walls, where it would have caught passersby's attention.
