This lithograph carries the slogan "The health of the child is the power of the nation" and was made for Children's Year, the April 1918 to April 1919 campaign to lower infant and child mortality and promote child welfare during World War I. The U.S. Children's Bureau and the Women's Committee of the Council of National Defense sponsored it, and the Committee on Public Information's Division of Pictorial Publicity distributed it. The painter F. Luis Mora, a Uruguayan-born American artist known for portraits and genre scenes, designed it. The poster links child welfare to national strength, a framing that wartime officials used to justify public investment in mothers and children.
