Printed in Louisiana under the WPA War Services program, this silkscreen poster carries the warning "Careless talk costs lives," a phrase that circulated widely in Allied wartime propaganda to remind civilians that casual gossip about troop movements, shipments or plans could reach enemy ears. The Work Projects Administration, a New Deal relief agency, employed artists to produce posters like this one for the war effort in the early 1940s. A date stamp of January 21, 1943, appears on the front, placing the piece in the period after the United States entered the war.
