Lord Kitchener, the British Secretary of State for War, is the figure at the center of this 1915 poster, and his pointing finger and direct gaze made him one of the most recognizable images of the First World War. The slogan "For Every Individual Briton" appeals to civilians to see the war effort as a personal duty. Kitchener had been appointed in August 1914 and quickly became a symbol of national resolve. The poster reflects the pressure of the early war years, when Britain was expanding its army through volunteer recruitment before conscription was introduced in 1916.
