The record identifies the sitter as Emory R. Buckner, though the title comes from caption cards written by the Bain News Service and has not been independently verified. The agency, based in New York, supplied portraits of lawyers, politicians and other public figures to newspapers during the first decades of the twentieth century, so the picture reflects the working press photography of its time. Because it survives as a small glass negative, its fine detail and tonal range are sharper than a later print might show, and the posing and studio lighting are typical of that period.
