This portrait shows Mrs. Josephus Daniels, whose husband served as Secretary of the Navy from 1913 to 1921 under Woodrow Wilson and guided the department through the First World War. Before entering the cabinet, Daniels had built his public reputation as editor of the *News & Observer* in Raleigh, North Carolina. The negative is a glass plate from the Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold news photographs to newspapers across the country in the early twentieth century. The record gives no date, and the name comes from the agency's caption information, which was not verified, so it is worth checking against other sources.
