Two of the best-known leaders of the American woman suffrage movement, Dr. Anna Howard Shaw and Carrie Chapman Catt, are named in this picture's title. Shaw, a physician and Methodist minister, led the National American Woman Suffrage Association from 1904 to 1915, and Catt succeeded her and carried the group to the campaign that won the 19th Amendment in 1920. The record does not give a date, and the names come from caption information the Bain News Service wrote on the negative or its card, which has not been independently verified. Bain's New York agency supplied news photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century, so the portrait likely reflects how the suffrage leaders were presented to the press during that period.
