Few details in this view stand out as much as the three tiers of bunks stacked along the walls of a cramped tenement bedroom, leaving little room to move. The picture belongs to a group of New York City tenement interiors dated only to between 1905 and 1910, a period when the city's crowded multifamily housing drew sustained attention from reformers. Following the Tenement House Act of 1901, which set minimum standards for light, air and sanitation, investigators and photographers recorded such rooms as evidence of conditions. The details on its original caption card are unverified, so the scene is best read as a sign of how many people were packed into small living spaces.
