The nave of the Great Exhibition, held in London in 1851, is the particular focus here, a view down the long central aisle of the Crystal Palace in Hyde Park. The building was a vast cast-iron and glass structure designed by Joseph Paxton, and its scale was the point: it was built in a matter of months and housed exhibits from across the world under one roof. Visitors came to see machinery, manufactured goods and products from Britain and its empire, and the event is often seen as a landmark in the display of industrial and international achievement. Look for the sheer height and lightness of the glazed roof, which contemporaries found astonishing.
