A game of Acey Deucy is under way aboard the battleship Arkansas, a backgammon-style pastime popular with navy crews in the early twentieth century. The Arkansas was commissioned in 1912 as one of the Navy's dreadnought battleships and served through the First World War, when long stretches at sea left crews looking for ways to pass time below deck. The glass negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by the New York agency that supplied news pictures to newspapers.
