Glass negatives from the George Grantham Bain Collection often arrived at the Bain News Service with little more than a caption card, and this one is no exception: its title, "Emigrants, returning for Balkan War," is marked as unverified, and no date is recorded. The subject points to the First Balkan War of 1912 to 1913, when Balkan states including Serbia, Bulgaria, Greece and Montenegro fought the Ottoman Empire, and many men living abroad, especially in the United States, traveled home to enlist or support the cause. Bain News Service, a Manhattan agency that supplied newspapers with wire photographs, recorded such scenes for quick publication, so the picture likely reflects the press interest of that moment.
