A Santa Claus figure stands among the demonstrators in this December 1922 view of a political amnesty picket outside the White House, a striking choice that turned a holiday symbol into a plea. The protesters were pressing for the release of people jailed for political opposition during and after the First World War, many of them convicted under wartime laws that limited speech. Pairing the picket with Christmas week gave the appeal a seasonal urgency, as campaigners asked the president to show mercy at the season of goodwill. The photograph was made by the National Photo Company, whose Washington staff documented street events and official life in the capital during the 1920s.
