This 1888 card advertises Yum Yum Tobacco and is catalogued as N403, a number from the N-series of tobacco cards that the Library's record places in the Benjamin K. Edwards Collection. Issued by August Beck & Company, it is an albumen photographic print, a process more often associated with portraits than with the chromolithographs that dominated most tobacco inserts of the period. Cards like this were packed with cigarettes or tobacco to stiffen the package and encourage repeat purchases, so the surviving examples preserve both the baseball imagery of the 1880s and the marketing methods of the cigarette trade.
