An unidentified woman stands at the center of this 1844 daguerreotype, and the record does not say who she was or where she sat, so her identity remains a question for the viewer. Daguerreotypes like this one were made on a silvered copper plate that had to be viewed at an angle to show its image, which gives the picture a mirror-like depth. By 1844, portrait studios had spread through American and European cities only a few years after the process was announced in 1839. Sitters often had to hold still for many seconds in strong studio light, so the stillness of the face and pose reflects the technology as much as the person.
