The sitter in this 1844 daguerreotype remains unidentified, and the record's title breaks off after "woman abou," so the reason for the portrait is lost to us. What survives is typical of the period's portraiture: a single image fixed on a polished silver-coated copper plate, which shows its picture only when tilted to catch the light. Early exposures could last from several seconds to a minute or more, so sitters held a rigid pose, sometimes steadied by a hidden headrest. Plates like this were often sealed in small hinged cases and kept as private keepsakes.
