This glass negative is labeled "H.A. Curran" and dated June 16, 1923, a specific day that sets it apart from the many other National Photo Company pictures in the collection. The company, based in Washington, D.C., produced large numbers of portraits, street scenes, and event photographs from about 1906 to 1936, and its glass plates were often stored and reused long after they were made. The record notes that this plate was a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947 and that it shows streaks and blemishes from the natural breakdown of its original coating, which are visible traces of its age. The title comes from data written on the negative or its sleeve and has not been independently verified.
