The caption on this 8 by 6 inch glass negative is cut short, with only "Am. Faes" legible after part of it tore away, so the date, December 22, 1920, is the most reliable clue to when it was made. The negative belongs to the National Photo Company Collection, from a Washington, D.C. firm that photographed the capital and its visitors through the 1910s and 1920s and left behind large stocks of glass plates. Its surface shows streaks and blemishes from the gradual breakdown of the original coating, a common condition in negatives of this age. Herbert A. French gave the plate to the Library of Congress in 1947.
