The title, *I'll Cop You Yet, My Valentine*, plays on "cop," which means both to catch someone and slang for a policeman, so the sweetheart is cast as an officer in pursuit of her beau. Comic Valentines like this were mass-produced in the United States and Britain around the turn of the twentieth century, when inexpensive postcards were a popular way to send a playful message. They leaned on rhymed verse, exaggerated figures and gentle teasing about courtship. The wordplay carries much of the joke, so the title is worth reading closely alongside the image.
