Birdsboro, a borough in Berks County, Pennsylvania, stood on the Schuylkill River's tributary valley in 1890, when its economy still rested heavily on iron. The river, nearby ore beds, and charcoal and coal fuel supplies had long drawn ironmasters to the district, and the furnaces and forges around town gave work to many of the families whose houses fill the map's streets. Like other small industrial boroughs of eastern Pennsylvania, Birdsboro was growing in population as workers arrived from the surrounding farms and from abroad, and its churches, schools, and volunteer fire companies were the institutions residents leaned on most. The map records that world at its own scale: the mills by the water, the rowhouses climbing the slopes, and the rail and road lines that carried the town's iron to markets in Philadelphia and beyond.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of Birdsboro, Pennsylvania, drawn in 1890. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
