Carbondale, Pennsylvania, in 1890 was a coal town in the Lackawanna Valley of northeastern Pennsylvania, where anthracite mining and the railroads that hauled it set the rhythm of daily life. The Delaware and Hudson Canal Company was the dominant employer, and its shops and rail yards shaped the town's streets and its economy. Many of the men working the nearby collieries were immigrants from Ireland, Wales, England, and Eastern and Southern Europe, and their churches, fraternal halls, and boarding houses filled the blocks shown here. Residents of the time would have known Carbondale first as a place where the rail lines met the coal, and this street-by-street view records how closely the town's houses, factories, and tracks were packed around that trade.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Carbondale, Pennsylvania, drawn in 1890. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
