Scranton, Pennsylvania, in 1890 was a coal and railroad city built over the anthracite seams of the Lackawanna Valley. Its collieries, iron furnaces, and rolling mills drew workers from Wales, Ireland, England, and later from Eastern and Southern Europe, and the population had climbed steeply since the town was incorporated as a city in 1866. The Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad carried coal east to markets in New York and beyond, and its shops and tracks shaped the crowded streets that fill this view. Residents knew Scranton as the center of the region's coal trade, a place where mine, mill, and rail work set the rhythm of daily life.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Scranton, Pennsylvania, drawn in 1890. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
