Here the Statue of Liberty is the one doing the talking, and the poster's title puts her plea in her own voice: billions of dollars are needed, and needed now. Printed in 1918, it belongs to the series of Liberty Loan campaigns the U.S. Treasury ran to finance American participation in the First World War, drives that relied on posters, rallies, and salesmanship to reach ordinary citizens. The urgency in the caption reflects how expensive the war had become for a country that had entered it only in 1917. Notice how the artist turns the national monument into a figure of direct appeal rather than a distant symbol.
