Pershing, the commander of the American Expeditionary Forces in World War I, was the figure most often honored in the victory parades that followed the Armistice, and this glass negative likely records one of them. The record gives no date or location, and its title comes from unverified caption data, so the exact event remains uncertain. Pershing led a large Fifth Avenue parade in New York in September 1919, and cities across the country staged similar processions for returning troops. Bain News Service, a commercial agency, photographed such events for newspapers, which is why its negatives capture the crowds, uniforms, and street scenes of the period.
