This negative is titled for General John J. Pershing, who commanded the American Expeditionary Forces in France during the First World War. The Bain News Service title is unverified and the record gives no date, so the exact street and occasion remain uncertain. Pershing's return from Europe in 1919 brought large welcoming processions to American cities, which makes that period a plausible context. Glass negatives like this one were the working medium of news photographers of the era, and the Bain collection preserves a close record of how such crowds gathered.
