Tait's title, "The Faithful Shepherds," puts the dogs at the center of the scene, with the flock as the reason for their watch. Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait was an English-born painter who spent much of his career in America and became known for sentimental pictures of farm animals, sporting dogs and rural life. This color lithograph was issued in New York and printed by the Gray Lithographing Company, one of the firms that made affordable chromolithographs for middle-class homes in the early 1900s. Prints like this were often sold as decorative pieces, so they show how popular taste valued animals as symbols of loyalty and domestic virtue.
