Thomas A. Edison appears here in a portrait made around 1906, a time when he was already one of the most recognizable figures in American life. By then he had built his reputation on the phonograph, the practical incandescent lamp, and the large research laboratory he ran at Menlo Park and later West Orange, New Jersey, where teams of engineers worked on problems he set for them. The print is a single photographic record from the Library of Congress's Prints and Photographs Division, and it captures the image of the inventor that the public and the press had come to expect: serious, self-assured, and identified with the idea of American ingenuity.
