The title, "To All Who Travel By," reads like a notice or greeting addressed to passengers, the kind of message railroads and travel companies printed on posters, cards and station signs. Its phrasing points to a time when the train was the main way Americans crossed the country, and when rail companies competed hard for riders with polished graphics and promises of comfort and safety. The board of train pictures it belongs to shows how central the railroad was to American life from the late 1800s into the mid-20th century. Looking closely at the lettering and layout can reveal a good deal about the marketing habits of its era.
