Few buildings in Washington state their purpose as plainly as this one. The Supreme Court moved into its own marble home on First Street NE, across from the Capitol, in 1935, after decades of sitting in chambers inside the Capitol itself. Architect Cass Gilbert gave it a colonnade of Corinthian columns and carved the phrase "Equal Justice Under Law" above the entrance. The photograph is part of the Farm Security Administration and Office of War Information collection, whose pictures documented American life and institutions in the late 1930s and early 1940s.
