Benjamin F. Butler is shown here holding back a crowd in New Orleans, a scene rendered in brown ink and wash over pencil by Charles S. Reinhart, who made several Civil War subjects for *Harper's Weekly* in 1896. The episode belongs to 1862, when Butler was named commander of the Union troops occupying the city. He governed the territory with a heavy hand, which earned him the bitter resentment of many Southerners and the nickname "Beast" Butler. The drawing's signatures and inscribed title suggest it was prepared for reproduction in the magazine.
