A campaign photograph of Herbert Hoover, possibly taken in New York City around 1928, though the location comes from an old caption card and has not been verified. That year Hoover, the Republican nominee and former Commerce Secretary under President Calvin Coolidge, ran against New York Governor Al Smith, whose home state and urban base made New York a closely watched arena. Campaign pictures from the period often show candidates at rallies, motorcades, and public appearances, when newspapers and newsreels were the main ways voters saw them. Hoover won the election in November 1928 by a wide margin. Looking at a picture like this one, viewers can get a sense of how presidential campaigning looked before television.
