Haskell Coffin's color lithograph was made for the third Red Cross roll call, a 1918 membership drive that asked Americans to enroll as members and support the organization's wartime work. The subject headings point to the campaign's broad reach, which covered nursing, the economic demands of the war, and the war bonds and funds that paid for relief efforts. Posters like this one were displayed in shop windows, post offices and public buildings, so that passersby could take in the appeal at a glance and sign up.
