The title, *El regreso del caníbal macrobiótico*, translates as "The Return of the Macrobiotic Cannibal," and the work stretches more than seven feet across eight joined sheets, a horizontal format that recalls pre-Columbian codices. Enrique Chagoya, a Mexican-born artist who has worked in California, made it in 1998 as a lithograph and woodcut printed on chine collé. This impression is numbered 23 of an edition of 30. Chagoya often places Mesoamerican picture-writing beside Western comic and colonial imagery to question who gets to tell the story of the Americas, and the wry tone of the title fits that approach.
