Unlike many baseball images of the period, this chromolithograph shows the moment of a slide, with a runner hurtling past a catcher toward the base. As a stock poster from 1897, it was a generic design that printers could sell to businesses, who would then add their own names and messages, so the image was meant to be reused rather than tied to one team or event. Sliding was still a relatively new and daring part of the game in the 1890s, and catchers of the era often worked without the protective gear used later. The print's bold color lithography also shows how advertising art of the late nineteenth century made sport a popular subject.
