The bold red diamond behind the words "V Invest!" gives this 1917 poster its striking center, and the letter V appears to play on the idea of victory. Posters like this were part of the home-front effort after the United States entered the First World War in April 1917, when the government needed private money to fund the war through Liberty Loan bond sales. Designers relied on bright flat colors and short, direct lettering so the message could be read quickly from across a street or a train platform. It is a useful reminder that the war was fought on civilian streets as well as overseas.
