This poster stands out because it was printed in Hawaii, by the Hawaiian Gazette Co. of Honolulu, rather than in one of the mainland American print shops that produced most wartime posters. Its slogan sets those "giving their lives over there" against those at home who must "give every cent you can spare," a direct appeal to civilians to fund the war effort through the American Red Cross. In 1918, Red Cross drives and Liberty Bond campaigns asked ordinary Americans to pay for relief work, supplies, and government borrowing, and posters like this one carried that message into streets, shops, and public buildings.
