This quarter-size stereoscopic daguerreotype shows a father and his young son, Emlen Cresson and William Emlen Cresson, made on March 13, 1858. The hand coloring adds tint to the portrait, which was a common finishing touch on daguerreotypes of the period. The image sits in a case inscribed "Mascher's Improved Stereoscope, Philada., Patent March 8, 1853," so the viewer was designed to show the pair of images in depth. The painted backdrop has led some researchers to suggest Philadelphia daguerreotypist Samuel Broadbent as the maker, though that attribution remains uncertain.
