Indianapolis hosted this 1909 balloon race, a kind of event that drew large crowds to open grounds in the early twentieth century. Balloon contests of that period were public spectacles: crews inflated their gas bags, launched within sight of the crowd, and then tried to travel the farthest or land nearest a target. The photograph belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, made up of news pictures that Bain, a New York news photographer, supplied to newspapers. Its newsroom origins explain the sharp, documentary view of the launch.
