Margaret Anglin, the Canadian-born stage actress, is the subject of this studio portrait, which carries the Sarony name of New York. Anglin became known for serious drama, including Greek tragedy and Shakespeare, and was among the leading tragediennes of the American stage in the early 1900s. The Sarony imprint points to the New York portrait studio of Napoleon Sarony, which was prominent from the 1860s through the 1890s and whose images circulated widely as theatrical publicity. The glass negative passed through the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency whose files record the city's stage, politics and daily life, and the title comes from caption information that has not been independently verified.
