Rows of young bean plants stretch across an open field here, their small green leaves just breaking the surface of the soil. Farm fields like this one were a familiar sight across rural America, where planting in straight rows made it easier to hoe, weed and harvest by hand or with early horse-drawn equipment. Beans were a staple crop for many family farms because they fixed nitrogen in the soil and could be dried and stored through the winter. Looking closely, the even spacing of the seedlings shows the careful work that went into preparing the ground.
