The title names the five Sullivan brothers of Waterloo, Iowa, who were reported missing in action off the Solomon Islands. All five had enlisted together and served on the light cruiser USS Juneau, which was sunk in November 1942 during the Guadalcanal campaign, and none of them survived. Their deaths drew national attention and led the Navy to adopt a rule keeping close relatives out of the same ships. This 1943 poster uses their story to encourage enlistment, presenting the family's sacrifice as a patriotic example for other young Americans.
