The name on this glass negative, J.J. McGraw, most likely refers to John J. McGraw, the longtime manager of the New York Giants who led the club to several pennants in the early twentieth century. The Bain News Service, a New York picture agency founded by George Grantham Bain, sold photographs of sports figures, politicians and news events to newspapers, and the identification comes from its caption cards, which the Library of Congress notes have not been independently verified. Because the date is missing and the negative is small, it is best read as a record of the agency's output rather than a fixed moment in McGraw's career.
