This glass negative is one of the Bain News Service portraits of a diplomat identified in its title as Baron R. Avezzano, a name that appears on the negative or its caption card. The record gives no date, and the title is unverified, so the identification should be treated as provisional. Bain News Service, founded in New York by George Grantham Bain, sent photographers to capture public figures in Washington and New York from the 1900s through the 1910s, producing a large body of news portraits for newspapers and magazines. Diplomats posted to the United States were frequent subjects, and their portraits offer a useful view of the formal style of the period.
